The Franklin County Master Gardeners and the OSU Chadwick Arboretum & Learning Gardens are sponsoring a presentation on the Asian Long-horned Beetle & the National Ash Seed Collection Initiative on Saturday, October 17, from 10 a.m. to noon in 103 Kottman Hall at Ohio State University. The presentation is free and open to the public. Asian long-horned beetle was accidentally imported from China. In 1996, infestations were discovered in New York, New Jersey, and Illinois. The insect killed thousands of trees, and removal and cleanup cost more than $168 million. In the U.S. the beetle prefers maples birches, Ohio buckeye, elms, horsechestnut, and willows. These pests have the potential to devastate hardwood trees. Paul Kanninen , Plant Protection and Quarantine Program Officer with the U.S. Department of Agriculture will discuss the Asian long-horned beetle. The Emerald Ash Borer has killed nearly 30 million ash trees. Losses are estimated in the tens of millions of dollars. There is a high probability that all American ash trees will be destroyed in our lifetime. The National Ash Seed Collection Initiative collects and stores ash seeds in cryogenic vaults at the National Center for Genetic Resources Preservation in Fort Collins, CO. If the population of American ash trees is destroyed, the stored seeds will be the genetic base to re-establish ash. Steve Crawford, an Earth Team volunteer with NCRS (Natural Resources Conservation Service, part of the USDA), will discuss the National Ash Seed Collection Initiative and demonstrate the collection process. Kottman Hall is located on the Ohio State University campus at 2021 Coffey Road, Columbus, OH 43210. Parking maps can be found at: http://chadwickarboretum.osu.edu/gardens/learning-gardens/. Pay-n-Display parking machines are installed in the parking lots adjacent to Kottman Hall. Parking permits should be displayed on the dashboard of your car.
