EAB Update A Success in Greene County (3/19/2009)
Greene County Master Gardener Volunteers with leadership from Barb Mills, Horticulture program assistant, put together an excellent update on the Emerald Ash Borer, March 4th at the Greene County Fairgrounds for both the homeowner and professional. The program featured Dan Herms, Ph.D. Entomology Professor at the Ohio State University.
Currently, the insect can be found not only in Ohio but also in Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Missouri, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Maryland. The zone of ash decline in southeast Michigan and northwest Ohio is spreading at the rate of 15-20 miles per year. Much of the spread of the insect beyond these areas is thought to be tied to movement of infested firewood out of quarantined areas. Some early infestations also were linked to movement of young ash trees for planting. The insect only poses a risk to ash trees.
The state quarantine is in effect to stop movement of firewood, ash trees or parts of ash trees out of counties where the insect has been found.
