The Latest on EAB Treatment Options (2/16/2009)
Homeowners, green industry professionals, local officials and others interested in trees will have a chance to learn about the latest treatment options for emerald ash borer (EAB) at a seminar offered by Ohio State University Extension in Xenia on Wednesday, March 4, from 2-7 p.m.
The free educational program will be held at the Greene County Fairgrounds Assembly Hall, 120 Fairground Rd., Xenia, Ohio.
Leading the seminar will be Dan Herms, an entomologist with OSU Extension and the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC). A national expert on EAB, Herms is a member of both the Ohio Emerald Ash Borer Task Force and the U.S.-Canadian Emerald Ash Borer Science Advisory Panel.
Herms will offer a review of the current status of EAB in Ohio and the future outlook for the insects invasion; an overview of management strategies for this exotic pest of ash trees; and details on the effectiveness of insecticide treatments available for both homeowners and professionals. He will speak at 2:30 p.m. and again at 5:30 p.m.
Throughout the seminar, representatives of insecticide companies including Arborjet, Bayer Advanced, Bayer Environmental Science, Mauget, Rainbow Treecare Scientific Advancements, and Valent Professional Products will be on hand to demonstrate their products and answer questions about treatments.
Accidentally imported from Asia, EAB is a small, shiny-green beetle that has killed millions of ash trees in several eastern and Midwestern states and in Ontario, Canada. It has been found in half of the Ohios 88 counties affecting individual homeowners, putting a burden on community budgets, and obliterating the once-profitable ash tree component of the states nursery industry.
